The audio of the much awaited Yuvan Shankar Raja's close friend and also Vishnuvardhan's Brother Krishna's movie named "Kazhugu" will be launched on November, 23 2011. Tracklist consists of five songs. Lyrics penned by Na. Muthukumar, Snehan & Yekkath. The Movie is scheduled for a December Release. Sony Music bagged the audio rights of Kazhu, it must be remembered that Yuvan's Previous album Mankatha sets a record in audio sales.

The highlight of the album is that one of the song sung by Yuvan Shankar Raja and another one crooned by Karthik Raja's Mesmerizing voice. The teaser trailer which was recently released officially by Kazhugu Movie team created more hype on the movie in entire tamilnadu. The movie is much expected in tamil industry as the big name Yuvan Shankar Raja is associated with this project.

Kazhugu is a tamil comedy-thriller film written and directed by newcomer Sathyasiva, starring Krishna Sekhar and Bindu Madhavi in lead roles. The film, produced by Krishna's father K. K. Sekhar along with K. S. Madhubala, features music composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja. The story revolves around four persons, referred to as "Kazhugu", who recover bodies of suicide victims who jump off a cliff. The film, based on real-life incidents, has been shot in real locations, including Kodaikanal, Theni and Munnar. It has been in making since late 2010 and is expected to release by late 2011.

The audio of the much awaited Pawan Kalyan's "Panjaa" directed by Vishnuvardhan and Music by Yuvan Shankar Raja will be launched on November, 19 2011 and at a radio station Red FM in the city of Andhra Pradesh. The Movie is scheduled for a December Release.

Music Prince Yuvan Shankar Raja’s Mother Jeeva Ilayaraja passed away Saturday(01-11-2011) night following cardiac arrest.

She had complained of chest pain and was rushed to Apollo Hospital, where doctors declared she was brought dead.

Family sources said Jeeva, 60, was suffering from viral infection for the past few days.

She had undergone a by-pass surgery about five years ago. Ilayaraja was in Hyderabad for recording and rushed to Chennai on hearing the news.

Former chief minister M. Karunanidhi and DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin, besides several movie personalities such as directors Balachandar, Bharathiraja, Balu Mahendra, Kasthuri Raja, Vasanth and Mahendran, actors Kamal Haasan, Sivakumar, Khushboo, Simbhu and Vishal, music directors M.S.

Viswanathan and Deva, called on Ilayaraja to offer condolences and pay last respects to his wife, whose body was kept at his T Nagar house.

Tamil Nadu Governor K. Rosaiah, in a condolence message, told Ilayaraja, “I am deeply shocked and grieved to hear about the sudden demise of your beloved wife”.

The last rites will take place on Wednesday at Jeeva’s birthplace, Pannayapuram, in Theni district.

Ilayaraja’s sons Karthik Raja and Yuvan Shankar Raja are also music composers while daughter Bhavatharini is a singer.

Expressing anguish at Ilayaraja’s bereavement, actor Sivakumar said it would be difficult to console someone who had lost his companion of decades and was taking care of his entire daily needs just like a mother.

Looks like Venkat Prabhu has finally decided on his next project! If the buzz in the Kollywood is true, then the Mankatha director has achieved a coup of sorts by signing up with none other than suriya for his next flick.

The director's Mankatha had the second highest opening ever in K-town, second to only the superstar's Endhiran. Though Suriya has agreed in principle to work with him, it looks like the director would have to wait for a while before the film can actually go on the floor. Suriya's 7am Arivu is yet to release and he has to complete Hari's film before he starts Venkat Prabhu's project.

The director spills the beans on how he got one of the season's best songs for his film...

It's a song that was on everybody's lips well before the movie was out and continues to do so even today, long after the film has gone out of theatres. But, it is only now that the cat is out of the bag and the secret pertaining to the En Kadhal Solla... song from the hit Paiyaa has been disclosed.

The director of the film, Lingusamy, at a recent awards ceremony, after giving out an award for the song, said, "Actually, I have to disclose a secret pertaining to this song, which has turned out to be a chartbuster. This song was not originally composed for my film Paiyaa. When we were composing songs for this film, Yuvan disclosed that he also had composed some numbers for a private album which he intended to release soon. When I listened to the number, I was so impressed by it that I immediately requested Yuvan to give me the song. Yuvan, very graciously, agreed."

The song, apparently, played a substantial role in the film's success as its peppy tune like many other numbers in the film, got audiences interested. The film, which turned out to be one of Karthi's biggest hits, also got dubbed in to several other languages.

None other than Yuvan Shankar Raja, who says he is looking forward to it. Yuvanshankar Raja will compose music for the first time for a film starring Chiyaan Vikram in the lead role. A source said, “The soundtrack remains similar to Pathinaaru, the film that Jolly Boy is based on. The Tamil original, although tanked at the box office, was hailed for its music, which Raja had composed for free, back then. He’s just recreated the same music with different singers for the Kannada version.”

When After Hrs contacted Raja, he didn’t bother reverting about the music or the film. And the producer of Jolly Boy, K Manju, also maintained, “Yuvan Shankar Raja is very busy, which is why he hasn’t been part of the promotional activities of the film so far.” D Sabapathy, the director of Pathinaaru, has directed this film as well, which has Diganth and Rekha in the lead.

While this remains puzzling, it isn’t new. AR Rahman, who had composed music for the Dhyaan-Sharmila Mandre film Sajini, too didn’t acknowledge his Sandalwood stint. Albeit he’d just recreated tunes from his hit Tamil film Jodi, he hasn’t really spoken about Sajini much. Does Sandalwood embarrass Kollywood composers.

Yuvan is the musician for all of Venkat Prabhu’s movies. Besides, I have also worked with Yuvan in many other movies. I share a good rapport with Yuvan so if we need an extended score for a song or any other visuals, he will always oblige. For instance, for the ‘Machi Bottle’ in Mankatha I felt if there is an extended portion since Ajith’s dance and Yuvan’s music was so much in sync it would be nice to extend the song a little bit. When I expressed Yuvan this interest, he immediately said yes.

Whenever I edit, I do that with music to get a sense of rhythm and particular pacing of a scene. So when I show the edited portions to Yuvan, it’s with music. He enjoys it. And if he feels he has to watch it without the music, he will say so. He is totally cool and keeps improvising. The version of ‘Kodana Kodi’ he gave us when the song went for shoots is different from the one we received afterwards. I had to totally rework on the edits and when I asked him in exasperation, he said ‘please do the re-cuts; imagine the number of times I had to suffer because of your edits.’ He is fun to work with.

I Will Be There For You - Music Video For Concert Promotion

A promotional music video for the concert, titled "I’ll Be There for You", was also made, composed and performed by Yuvan Shankar Raja himself, who also appears in the video. Pradeep Milroy Peter, programming head of Vijay TV said, "When we asked Yuvan whether we could do a music video to promote the event, he immediately accepted it", further noting that the whole process, "right from penning lyrics, to scoring music," was completed in a week. The lyrics of the song was written by Na. Muthukumar, which, according to him, would talk about "the relationship the music director and his fans shared".

The video was shot in three consecutive nights at the Prasad Studios on sets created by art director Santhanam, with Vishnuvardhan directed the video, Kalyan doing the choreography and Nirav Shah handling the cinematography, who used a Red Camera for the shoot. The music video was released on 29 January 2010 at Sathyam Cinemas, with directors Venkat Prabhu, Lingusamy and Ameer attending, and was first telecasted on television on the same day.

Yuvan - Live in Concert is a concert by Indian musician Yuvan Shankar Raja. The concert, Yuvan's second in his career, took place on Pongal, 16 January 2011 at the YMCA Grounds, Nandanam, Chennai. With several hits and an award, Yuvan Shankar Raja has evolved as the hottest music director of Tamil cinema. Tamil film music has changed drastically as a new breed of music directors and singers has taken over. This has also completely altered the way music is composed these days. Although the story, presentation and the actors may have changed in Tamil films, songs still remain an essential part of commercial cinema. Remember that a decade ago six or seven singers held sway along with great music directors. Today nearly 130 singers and 45 music directors have come and gone in the last two years! Today, it is not a question of who gives soulful music but who can turn out chart busters.

Says Selvaraghavan, Kollywood's new-age director: "Our films are not taken seriously by the Western audience as there are far too many songs in the narrative. But I can't imagine making a film without [them], which is what attracts the audience initially to any Indian film."

Music for the youth

Yuvan Shankar Raja has evolved as the hottest music director of Kollywood who has the eyes and ears of Generation Next. A large chunk of music listeners (nearly 85 per cent according to audio industry estimates) comprises the under-25 crowd, which listens to music on IPod, FM radio, television, at pubs and parties. This crowd likes new sounds and is ready for something innovative.

A popular countdown show on an FM channel recently featured at Number 3 the song "Taj Mahal... " from `Kalvanin Kadhali', "Poga..Poga... " from `Pattiyal' at Number 2 and at the top position was "Enga Yeriya... " from `Puthupettai.' All three numbers have music by Yuvan Shankar Raja.

Last week was even more memorable for Yuvan as he was adjudged best music director at the Cyprus International Film Festival for his score in `Raam.' Says a beaming Yuvan, "I felt elated and happy as it is an international award. It is a gift from God as the `Raam' album has my mother's favourite song `Aarariraro... ' sung by Jesudas uncle and my personal favourite `Boom Boom... ' the hip-hop number."

When asked how he has become the youth icon of Tamil film music, Yuvan shrugs and says, "When I started out nearly 10 years ago, the music scene was very different. I wanted to do something different from the run-of-the-mill variety. So I evolved a style of my own and preferred to cater to only the youth. My growth has been gradual and not overnight which also helped me to stabilise and believe in my kind of music."

Yuvan (26) made it big only in the last two years and has made rapid strides with films like `Kadhal Kondein,' `7-G Rainbow Colony,' `Manmathan' and `Arindhum Ariyaamalum' among others. He attributes a large part of his success to the new breed of film directors with whom he shares a great rapport. "They are all below 30, and are more like friends and we also think alike. Our wave-lengths are same and I definitely love working with only people my age group who vibe well with me. They understand the importance of music in today's commercial cinema and song placement," says Yuvan.

Directors like Selvaraghavan, Vishnuvardhan and Silamabarasan have been able to get good music from him.

Yuvan says that he has created the hip-hop style in Tamil music.

Hip-hop is a sort of a rap music made up of two components rapping and D jing (audio mixing) initiated by black Americans and Latinos in New York City in 1970s. Today hip-hop style of music is universal and in Tamil, Yuvan says that songs like "Thee Pidikka..," "Namma Kaattile... " and almost all the songs in `Pudhupettai' have become chartbusters.

There has also been criticism that a lot of English lyrics mostly written by Yuvan and his team are being incorporated in his songs. Yuvan defends himself by saying: "I am just trying to be different with different beats, some local lyrics mixed with English that goes down well with the audience. Today lifestyles have changed and people like to try out something new just like they change their mobiles frequently!"

Purists have also been bitter about the new trend of remixes that Yuvan is famous for. Adds Yuvan, "I know that a lot of people including my brother Karthik Raja are against the remix trend. However I think they are popular as there is a blend of modern and nostalgia and this appeals to a wider section of listeners."

His favourites

Yuvan's favourite instruments are the piano and the guitar, which he uses more for his compositions along with a lot of software options available on the computer and various gizmos. Adds Yuvan, "Today technology helps you a great deal which has its own advantage like producing a number [that is] really fast."

Meanwhile Yuvan is all excited about his new project, an exclusive album with a mix of Tamil and English pop songs. He has already immersed himself in the creation with international artists featuring on it.

The album has been planned for a Summer 2007 release. Concludes the young master: "Music is the most powerful tool of human emotions. It is my greatest passion and connects me with people."

As I wait for Yuvan Shankar Raja at a quaint studio in Saligramam, my mind rewinds his success story. A reluctant musician, he wanted to become a pilot and zip across the globe. But music happened even before he passed out of school. And since 1997, his staying power in capricious Kollywood remains unquestionable. Despite his CDs burning up the barcodes in music stores, he’s still not given up his dream to fly. Come December, and he’ll crisscross continents — not as a pilot, but as a showman-musician.

As Yuvan appears in-between re-recording for director Ameer’s “Yogi”, he seems as pleased as Punch. The usually reticent musician is gung-ho about his world tour “Oru Naalil…” that’s scheduled to begin in Dubai. And the conversation flows much like his musical cadences.

“It’s a mega, one-of-a-kind stage show with plenty of surprises thrown in. The three-hour, high-energy spectacle will feature a galaxy of stars from the music world. Shankar Mahadevan, Hariharan, Karthik, Harish Raghavendra et al have been roped in to perform. Simbu will belt out his hits. We are getting professional dancers from Mumbai, and a lively LED presentation will form the backdrop for the show. We are specially shooting and compiling footage for the presentation. My introduction will involve a stunning stunt sequence,” explains maestro Ilaiyaraaja’s scion.

With an oeuvre that spans genres — from zingy folk to soothing Broadway jazz, the composer is confident “Oru Naalil…” will be “on the lines of a Madonna or an MJ show.” Self-assured, he adds, “It’ll take stage shows several notches up. Besides the razzmatazz, we have planned contests and special merchandise such as caps and tees for the events. Talks are on to hold the show in Muscat and Kuwait. If it clicks, we’ll perform there before moving to Canada. The beginning of next year will be quite a whirl. We are looking at destinations in the U.S. and South Africa.”

STEPS TO SUCCESS

As someone who has skilfully navigated those tricky steps to success, Yuvan says, “Life’s been quite a journey. My career has been slow, yet steady. I like it that way. I never wished for overnight success. Neither did I want to rush through my career and suffer a burn-out.”

Yuvan says he approaches work with a fun attitude that helps him beat stress. “I was never interested in studies. And honestly, I never felt I had it in me to make good music. I guess, the environment in which I grew up — dad neck-deep in music, my sister Bavatharini on the piano all the time and brother Karthik Raja constantly hooked on the latest music technology — just stirred me to take the first step. ‘Thuluvatho Ilamai’ and ‘Poovellam Kaettupaar’ proved to be turning points.”

Today, the pint-sized dynamo has become a juggernaut you can’t stop. Simultaneously working on half-a-dozen films, including the much-awaited “Yogi”, “Goa” and “Paiyaa”, he doesn’t get things mixed up. “I see every director as a different brand. That way, it’s easy for me to compartmentalise my work. So I can easily switch from one film to the other and refresh myself when I hit a mental block. I don’t want my music to sound like a pastiche of other works. So I stop listening to my songs once the audio for a film is released. When I unwind, it’s usually with jazz.”

GOING LIVE

Despite being a techno-freak, Yuvan is certain there’s more soul in live recordings. “Dad used to say it’s the backbone for any musical endeavour. And I’ve realised that with time. So most often, my re-recordings are live. Technology does enhance music, but the warmth of a live orchestra is incomparable. Fans wrote to me after ‘Oru Devadai…’ (“Vaamanan”) saying the score had a divine quality. That’s because it was done live. Besides, I’m also conscious of the employment problem that technology-driven music creates.”

Yuvan’s plans for the future include producing Pop albums and alternative cinema. “My mind’s buzzing with scripts. I want to do something really different. A long-term goal is to open an orphanage for kids. I’ve envisioned something of huge proportions. But first let me make the money for it.”

It’s back to “Take” at the studio and Yuvan melts away in the darkness. After 60-odd films, he still remains hooked. Stay tuned…

DADDY COOL

Dad is a man of few words. He rarely discusses my compositions. But I hear him humming my numbers to my nephew. The recent one is a hit from the Telugu flick “Oy”. A musical genius in the family is both a huge advantage and a disadvantage. I’ve absorbed so much from my father. But, at the same time, fans keep writing to me saying they expect more from me — because of my lineage!

BIG BROTHER

Karthik Raja is immensely talented. It’s unfortunate he hasn’t got the right break. Be it technology, manuscript or knowledge of genres, he is thorough. I’m sure he will make it ASAP.

SCORING POINT

I’ve no regrets in my personal and professional life. Being a spiritual person, I believe whatever happens, happens for the good. I simply follow what dad says, ‘With music, you can reach out and spread happiness.’

I’m camera shy. But I had to do a portfolio for my world tour. So Karthik of Dreeamcast and I worked in tandem and conceptualised the shoot. I wanted a rock star look. A R Rahman’s becoming an international brand and his global itinerary is working in favour of his counterparts back home or so it seems. The young music composers of Kollywood are churning out hit after hit to fill the temporary vacuum created by the Oscar winner’s absence and leading their pack is none other than Yuvan Shankar Raja. He arrived in Kollywood with the entry card of being maestro Illayaraja’s son but to give full credit to his talent he has survived on his own. Over the years he has proved his mettle by creating one hit album after another. The music he made in 2010 has been a highwater mark in his career particularly because the year before that was a jinxed one.

Last year, Yuvan was in the headlines for all the wrong reasons on the personal and professional fronts. His much publicised break off with director Selvaraghavan was considered a blow to his career. But Yuvan seems to have bounced back with vigour. He began 2010 with a bang with Goa. The songs went on to become huge hits. He followed it up with half a dozen songs in Lingusamy’s Paiyya which stayed right on top of the audio charts.

Referred to as the ‘rock star of Tamil cinema’, Yuvan’s songs in successive films including Baana Kathadi and Kadhal Solla Vandhen have also become popular. Come Friday Naan Mahan Alla starring Karthi and Kajal Agarwal for which Yuvan has scored music is hitting the screens. Success breeds more success they say and Yuvan’s kitty is full of new offers. On working in several projects simultaneously, he has recently tweeted, ‘Its hard to explain how I feel rite now, words can’t fit my emotions, been working all odd hours! Feel so new! I love what I’m doing!’

His forthcoming films include director Ameer’s Adhi Bhagavan and director Bala’s Avan Ivan. He is also scoring music for Ajith’s Mankatha. On working with an intense filmmaker like Bala, Yuvan has tweeted ‘it’s a challenge for me to work with bala, to satisfy him with my tunes! It’s a great experience to work with him! The hectic schedule is not affecting the quality of his work, if one goes by the hits he has been giving. Major awards and accolades are still eluding this young master but as Yuvan himself says in one of his tweets, ‘the ultimate award for me is seeing u people love my music n my music being a part of your lives, in every way.

The Experience Called Yuvan Shankar Raja

It was when Rahman had conquered the King’s dominion by the mid 90’s and Ilayaraja had started coming to terms with not being the ruler anymore, this teenager hiked on a picnic that no one expected to turn into a new era of music. Sure, at 16, you are too naïve to take the bull by the horns and have a ride on it. But this teenager certainly had a bigger future which Kollywood conveniently didn’t see coming. Though Aravindhan hardly took any notice, Yuvan certainly seemed to get a grip of things in just about three movies. With the bouncy Jyothika dancing away to the tunes of his in the scenically captured ‘churidhar anindhu’ or Surya crooning to his aching love in ‘Irava Pagala’, Poovellam Kettupar did send noises about somebody landing on Tamil music. After a couple of more forgettable scores, Yuvan seemed determined to prove his grit when A R Muradoss trusted him with Dheena. I can see what you are thinking; Murugadoss was not as huge a brand as he is today. But the combination proved lucky to Yuvan for it took away the skepticism that surmounts celebrities hailing from affluent families. Then came Thulluvatho Ilamai and later, Nandha. Almost every music lover I knew invested in a copy of Thulluvatho Ilamai music cassette (people were yet to be introduced to CDs then) which was indeed worth the money, sabotaging all doubts about this musician who by then had emerged into a brand called ‘Yuvan Shankar Raja’.

From his baby-walk days to the most recent season where his topical Telugu blockbuster ‘Oy’ is dancing on top of the charts, he has a journey defined more by music than commercialism. When I say that, I mean it’s refreshing to see him not investing much of his interests in films that start and end with the hero. I am not debating if music in such movies (where the story is made to make the hero

heroic) is inferior. It could have been a coincidence but Yuvan’s projects predominantly teamed him up with directors who preferred stories to heroes which is perhaps the reason why he did not have to meet dead ends while letting his experiments take over.

I wonder what his personal favorite is. If I were to pick one, among a few others, I would hand pick the theme-track of 7G which am sure would definitely make a haunting memory in the minds of music lovers. What about Kadhal kondein or pudhupettai or the incorrigibly haunting ‘engeyo partha mayakkam’ from Yaaradi nee mohini? You ask. Sure, his compositions are unique yet carry a discernible difference from another which is perhaps why the best tracks by Yuvan seem to fall in completely different genres. Engeyo Partha Mayakkam which is a blend of soft instrumentals playing in the backdrop of a love-struck mood is sweet to listen to and instantly dwelling while the husky tone of kadaloram from Kungumapoovum Konjumpuravum sizzles with the inexplicable desires of love. The two songs belong to different families of tunes yet beautifully bring about the different shades of love, almost setting in a state of trance where the mind wanders to the romantic phase of one’s life.

Talking of romance, who can forget the background score from 7G, especially that in the climax? It’s nothing less than a master piece and the BGM is one of the reasons why the movie still stands apart in the chronology of love stories in Tamil. That way, though greatly acclaimed for his flair for background scoring, an award exclusively in the category of background score from his home ground is yet to arrive, not to forget the Cyprus International Film festival for best musical score for Raam that couldn’t have suited anybody better. It has been a dream run for Yuvan Shankar Raja in 2010. Songs from four out of the eight films for which he composed music this year feature among the top 10 chartbusters of the year. It is a unique feat by any yardstick. In an exclusive interview, Yuvan Shankar Raja opens up...

You have been constantly churning out chartbusters this year. Four of the films — Paiyaa, Naan Mahaan Alla, Baana Kaathadi and Boss Engira Bhaskaran — feature in 2010's Top 10.

(Smiles) It was a good year for me. To be honest, whenever I work hard, I don't expect anything; it just happens I had a breezy year and I will say it's all due to God's blessings.

But what's your favourite album among these four?

I like all my albums; so, picking a favourite is difficult. Still, I enjoy the song Iragai Pole... the most.

People in the industry say that you understand the pulse of today's youth...

(Laughs) My passion in life is music. I just enjoy creating music. First and foremost, the tune I create should strike a chord with me. In most cases, I have found that people also fall in love with the song that is my favourite.

They call you the hit factory. Don't you feel that you are too prolific as you have done eight films this year?

I've learnt from my dad that music is like breathing. Creating tunes is a natural process. Next year, I might probably have a dozen releases.

How do you choose a project?

My comfort level with the director is important. I have a set of directors like Venkat Prabhu and Vishnu Vardhan with whom I have a good rapport. This has resulted in good music.

The producer of your latest film, Pathinaru, has put you on the posters of the film. Are you planning to turn a hero?

No way, I'm happy being just a composer. I like my music to speak rather than seeing my posters pasted all over town. As far as the audio of Pathinaru is concerned, I finished the album eight months back. Probably they are just trying to promote the film. My anna, Karthik Raja, has sung a solo song for me for the first time.

You have recently tweeted that you are doing Selvaraghavan's new film...

It's nice to be back with Selva. I will be doing Selva's new project for which he is shooting at the moment with Dhanush and Andrea. It has been titled Erandam Ulagam. It's a pure love story made on a different note.

What next?

I'm doing a live concert in my home town (Chennai) on January 16. I promise you it will be a musical treat for my fans. We will have Bollywood singers like Shankar Mahadevan, Shreya Ghosal, Javed Ali and all the big singers from the Tamil film industry performing on the show. Several actors, including my buddy Simbu, have promised to take part in the show which will be telecast in a leading channel.

I have just shot a music video with Vishnu Vardhan and Nirav Shah as a promo for the concert.

Any New Year resolutions?

I love to dream big. I want to step into Hollywood in 2011, and I'm working towards that.

How long do you plan to remain single?

I'm thinking of getting married next year. But don't jump to conclusions. For the record, I'm not seeing anybody!

His recent hits include Saroja and Aegan. This son of maestro Ilaiyaraja will soon launch a production house and is also working on a music album for Sony.

The talented youngster talks about his current projects and future plans.

Did you always want to get into the field of music?

I wanted to become a pilot and travel all over the world. But I grew up with music around me. My brother Karthik Raja was learning the piano while my sister attended music classes. As for my father, music is life. When I was in school, my mother asked me whether I was interested in music. I started learning from Jacob master. One day my mother asked me to compose a song. I did so just to satisfy her. Producer Siva of Amma Creations listened to the track and liked it. He wanted to know if I was interested in composing music for films. I told him I had to get permission from my parents. My parents gave the go-ahead and Aravindan, my first film, happened.

Comparisons with your celebrated father are inevitable. How do you handle them?

My father is beyond comparison with anybody, leave alone me. I cannot imagine getting anywhere near him. But my brother Karthik is more talented than I am and I feel he should have got a break before me. He is yet to get a good team to work with. I am confident that he will certainly be able to do it and prove himself.

Singing, acting and now producing films.

I am passionate about music. While composing a song, I would sing the track myself for the producer and the director. . On many occasions, they insisted I retained the song in my voice but I would say a polite ‘no’. But sometimes I accepted their suggestion and sang some songs. Then some acting offers too came my way and I simply accepted them. It fetched me appreciation. The reason behind starting a production company, Pink Stone Pictures, was to make the kind of films I like. S. D. Sabha will direct my first film as producer. Siva is the hero. The rest of the cast and credits are being worked out.

What do you think about remix songs as you too have done some?

I do remix numbers only after getting a ‘no objection’ from the concerned music director, even if it is my father. If the songs are liked by the audience, why not?

Music directors rarely agree to do albums. You are working on one. What kind of album is it?

A bilingual (Hindi and Tamil), my album is aimed at youngsters. It will have songs in different styles. In fact, I plan to compose a song like the one my father did for Mumbai Express. It will have no background music. My album will have a story interspersed with songs.

When we are technically sound why should music directors head westwards to do the final mixing of songs?

We do not have state-of-the-art equipment as it is very expensive. We also do not have people who can handle it. I learn more when I go abroad. I get inspired. And life is all about learning.

Congrats on bagging the best music director award at Cyprus?

I felt elated and happy as it is an International award. It is a gift from God as Raam album has my mother's favourite song "Aarariraro…" sung by Jesudas uncle and my personal favourite "Boom Boom…" the hip-hop number.

How did you emerge as the youth icon of Tamil film music?

When I started out nearly 10 years back, the music scene was very different. I wanted to do something different from the run-of-the-mill variety. So I evolved a style of my own and preferred to cater to only the youth. My growth had been gradual and not overnight which also helped me to stabilize and believe in my kind of music.

Whom do you attribute your success to?

I owe it all to my directors with whom I share a great rapport. They are all below 30, are more like friends and we also think alike. Our wave length is same and I definitely love working with only people in my age group who vibe well with me. They understand the importance of music in today's commercial cinema and song placement.

Yuvan- Selvaraghavan combination is the best. Please comment?

(Smiles) It's not like that. We are good friends though I have made good music for Vishnuvardhan, Silamabarasan and others.

Your critics point out that you brought in the new trend of having remixes in albums?

I know a lot of people including my brother Karthik Raja are against the remix trend. However I think they are popular as there is a blend of modern and nostalgia and this appeal to a wider section of listeners. Today technology helps you a great deal which has its own advantage like producing a number really fast.

Yuvan Shankar Raja is composer Ilayaraja's son, and if his current body of work is anything to go by, then the maestro’s son is sure to be doing his father proud.

Beginning his career in the late 1990s by scoring the music for Aravindhan's trailer at the age of 16, Yuvan has since worked with several prominent directors in South India. The third and youngest child of Ilyaraja, Yuvan has two music directors as brothers too – Karthik Raja and Bhavatharini. And yet, all Yuvan ever wanted to become was a pilot.

We spoke to the young genius about his music, his opinion of Bollywood music, and his many forthcoming projects.

What's it like being the son of a legend?

It has its pros and cons. The advantages are obvious. The disadvantages are that people expect more from you. No matter how well you do, people expect you to deliver more.

Being Ilayaraja's son, were you always inclined to become a musician?

Actually, I always wanted to become a pilot. But I suppose you could say that now I'm flying high on music! I once accompanied my father when he was working on Mani Ratnam's Anjali. The score needed a rap by a child and my father asked me to sing it. I did a small portion of the song, ‘Mutamadi, mutamadi’. When I was recording it, I was just speaking the words as I read them on the paper. I remember my father telling me from the control room: "C'mon Yuvan, I want you to sing it like Michael Jackson!” It was an amazing moment.

How did you land your first assignment?

I had my own set of keyboards and I had worked on some tunes. The director of the movieAravindhan heard one of my songs and suggested that I do the soundtrack for the trailer of the movie. I told him that he’d have to ask my parents. They agreed, and soon I made my debut.

Did you have all the tunes ready or did you have to figure out what the director wanted?

I had no experience at all and everything was new to me. Only after I was signed on that did I actually began. The movie didn’t do well, because of which I was heartbroken. But soon I got Thulluvadho Illamai, which become quite a hit.

Do you remember your first day as a music director?

I remember that A R Rahman was also releasing an album the day my movie was to release, so I was very scared. But my movie did pretty well.

Bollywood is now copying music from South Indian films. How did that happen?

I personally feel that the music in South Indian cinema is much better; that’s my opinion. Some people I like in Bollywood are Ismail Darbar and Vishal Bharadwaj’s stuff. But now the South Indian movie industry is expanding and there will be even more remakes of our stuff.

Your earlier music was quite loud and trendy; but for Nandhaa it was different, more soul-searching. What's that about?

Basically I scored music as per the script’s requirement, and the story needed such music. My songs are usually beat-oriented. I thought of doing something different in the movie Nandhaa.

Have you ever tired of being seen as Ilyaraja's son rather than as music director Yuvan?

I am known for what I am. And nothing can change the fact that I am his son.

Apart from your father, who has inspired your music?

I was a big fan of Michael Jackson as a child. And I really love R D Burman songs .

Do you ever compete with your brothers?

No (laughs). We have our different styles.

Which films are you currently scoring music for?

Q: So how did your first offer to score music for a film come up? How did happen?

I was just whiling away time with my friends, doing nothing in particular till I was sixteen when my mom thought I should work on some album. During my school days I used to participate in cultural programs. So I started working on the album and in the mean time the director of the movie 'Aravindhan' heard one of my songs and suggested that I do soundtrack for the trailer of his movie starring by Mr Sarath Kumar and produced by T.Siva. So I worked on that project and everyone was impressed with my work. After my Dad gave the final nod, bingo, there I was making my debut as a music director.

Q: When you composed music for your first film was it a let me give-it-a-shot kind of a try or was it a serious decision of changing your passion into profession?

Yes, when I started my project I considered it, as a profession and I did not realize it much then.

Q: When you went about working on the music for your first film, did you already have tunes in mind or was it only after you had signed up, you started from scratch on the music of the film?

Yes, I started from the scratch except one of the songs, which was already composed.

Q: Do you remember your first day officially as a music director? Were you thrilled, excited, nervous…? How did you feel? Which is the first song you scored music for and which is your favorite song in your composition till to date?

Yes, on the stage for Pooja I was very nervous and on seeing the very huge audience. The first song I composed was 'All the best' and my favorite song till date is 'Idhu Kadhala' from 'Thulluvathum Illamai'.

Q: Apart from the fact music is genetic your family, whom else do you attribute your inspiration point for you to enter the music world?

I used to get inspired by some songs and would try to some number like them but now I don't get inspired by any thing.

Q: Coming from a family of music directors did you feel challenged? Being the Maestro's offspring and Karthik Raja's brother did you initially feel pressurized by great expectations that surrounded you then?

Yes, I had great pressure in me, which I have to live up to, the people's expectation and I felt it as a challenge.

Q: For any music director who tries to make his debut, it is very difficult to set the trend because your Dad has covered such a wide area in the music spectrum, but you were able to justify your style of music with a touch of youthfulness and spunk to your composition? Was it a deliberate attempt or was it just a reflection of your age in your music?

It's basically like this, mostly my songs are not for the highly musically analytical kind. I want to cover the youngster's mind though projects like Nandha was aimed at a more mature audience. But most of my songs are for the average youth.

Q: Though the score for your initial films were more on the trendy & vibrant side, your composition for Nandhaa was quite different; it was more of a heavy and soul-reaching kind. Was it because of the subject and theme of the film or your exploration into a different level of music?

Basically I scored music for the script and the story needed such a heavy music. I wanted to show my new styles, which I had experimented with. My songs are usually beat oriented. I thought of doing something different in the movie Nandha and so I did.

Q: Do you feel the way the script and scene is being narrated to a music director plays an important role in his music composition in a film?

Yes, of course, the scenes and script plays an important role and I have to get inspired to give my best.

Q: Do you compose music for lyrics or vice-versa? Or is it a mix n match of both?

Yes, it's a mix and match of both and it also depends on the situation of the scene.

Q: At any point of time did you get tired of people judging you as Ilayaraja's son, basically when they put you under his shadow and not as Yuvan Shankar Raja?

I didn't see tired at all and I am known for what I am and at same time people expect from me much what the should and could, after all knowing about my father's talent and no one could change the fact that I am his son.

Q: What are the next films in hand you are right now scoring the music for?

My forthcoming projects are Lovers, Popcarn, Winner, Enna Sollapogirai, Junior Senior, Colombus, one untitled Telugu Song. Thiruda, April Mathathil,and more to come.

Q: When do you think you will come full circle in the field of music? What is it that you do would give you that sense of achievement of a lifetime?

I am mostly involved in this field and my dream was to work on an international project and that will happen soon.

Yuvan Shankar Raja married his longtime girlfriend Sujaya Chandran on 21 March 2005, at Mayor Sri Ramanathan Chettiyar Hall in Chennai, India. Chandran hat met him in 2002 as a fan at a music cultural program in London and both fell in love later. Chandran was a London-based singer and the daughter of Dr. C. R. Velayutham and Dr. Sarojini Chandran.

They had a secret registered marriage in September 2003 in London, before the formal public wedding was held in 2005 with the consent of their parents.

In August 2007, they filed for divorce with mutual consent, which was granted in February 2008, after 6 months. The reason for the divorce was cited to be "irreconcilable differences".

Yuvan's Recent Works in Tamil Cinema

In 2008, five films, featuring Yuvan's music were released, two of them being the Tamil and Kannada remakes of Aadavari Matalaku Ardhalu Verule, titled Yaaradi Nee Mohini and Anthu Inthu Preethi Banthu, respectively, which partly featured the original score and songs. The Tamil version, in particular, was able to repeat the success of the original film, emerging a high commercial success, while yielding Yuvan his second Filmfare nomination. Out of his nine 2009 releases, hardly any managed to succeed, in spite of receiving widespread critical acclaim, since the respective films failed at the box office. Excluding the romantic comedy Siva Manasula Sakthi, featuring his most popular song of the year "Oru Kal", his other films were box-office bombs, while few songs like "Siragual" (Sarvam) and "Aedho Saigiral" (Vaamanan) still became popular.He had also provided a rural score again in Kunguma Poovum Konjum Puravum and a sarangi-based score for the urban action drama of Ameer's Yogi, both going unnoticed. His score for his Telugu romantic musical Oy!, meanwhile, fetched him the Special Jury Award at the 2010 South Filmfare Awards.

In late 2009, the soundtrack album of Paiyaa released, which was regarded as a "blockbuster album" and "magnum opus", as it went on to become exceptionally popular, much prior to the film's release, and probably one of Yuvan Shankar Raja's biggest success of his career. The song "Thuli Thuli" had become the first Tamil song to be featured in the India Top 20 list for April 2010, indicating it was the most frequently played Tamil song on all Indian FM radio stations in the history of Tamil film music. The film itself became one the highest earners of the year, particularly supported by Yuvan's score and songs. Along with Paiyaa, songs from three more films for which he composed music that year - Naan Mahaan Alla, Baana Kaathadi and Boss Engira Bhaskaran - featured among the Top 10 chartbusters of the year.

Besides Tamil films, he has also scored music for films in other South Indian languages. Around 35 of the Tamil films, for which he had composed music, were afterwards dubbed intoTelugu, Kannada or Malayalam languages as were the respective soundtracks. Apart from these ones, he also worked "straightly" on Telugu projects such as Seshu, Malli Malli Chudali,Happy, Raam, Raju Bhai and Aadavari Matalaku Ardhalu Verule, making him a well-known composer in Andhra Pradesh, too. His latest Telugu album Oy! has become a grand success as it topped the charts for several weeks.

In 2010 he composed his first Bollywood song "Haq Se" as part of the ensemble soundtrack of the film Striker, starring his close friend Siddharth, which received thoroughly positive reviews. His latest soundtracks, which got popular among the masses, include Naan Mahaan Alla, Goa, Paiyaa, Vaamanan, Sarvam, Boss Engira Bhaskaran, Avan Ivan, Vaanam and Mankatha. He is currently working on nearly ten projects simultaneously, including Ameer's Aadhi Bhagavan, the N. Lingusamy directorial Vettai, the Mani Ratnam-produced Bloody Paki, his first proper Bollywood project, and nearly a half-dozen other small-budget films.

Yuvan Shankar Raja's collaborations with several film directors such as Selvaraghavan, Ameer Sultan, Vishnuvardhan, Venkat Prabhu and Linguswamy have always resulted in highly successful soundtracks. Likewise he has often worked together with noted Tamil poet Vaali and young Tamil lyricists including Na. Muthukumar, Pa. Vijay and Snehanto come up with much-loved compositions.

Yuvan Shankar's 2004 releases, 7G Rainbow Colony, another Selvaraghavan film, and Silambarasan's Manmadhan, were both critically and commercially successful films, featuring acclaimed as well as popular music by Yuvan Shankar Raja, which also contributed to the films' successes. His work in the former, in particular, got critically acclaimed and eventually led him to win the Best Music Direction Award at the 2004 Filmfare Awards South; receiving the award at the age of 25, he remains the youngest winning music composer of the award. From since, he has had nine to ten releases every year on average, turning him into one of the most busiest and prolific Indian film composers.

His first of nine album releases of 2005 was Raam. His score for the Ameer-directed thriller, labelled as "soul-stirring", fetched him further accolades and eventually yielded a win at the 2006 Cyprus International Film Festival for Best Musical score in a Feature Film, the first such award for an Indian composer. His success streak continued with his following releases of that year, low-budget films such as Arinthum Ariyamalum, Kanda Naal Mudhal and Sandakozhi surprisingly becoming successful ventures at the box office, since also Yuvan Shankar's compositions like "Theepidikka", "Panithuli" and "Dhavani Potta" from the respective soundtracks became popular anthems among the masses and played an important role for the films's successes. After the release of the soundtrack for the S. J. Suryaah-starring romantic comedy, Kalvanin Kadhali that also enjoyed popularity post the film's release, his final album of 2005, Pudhupettai, released, which saw him once again collaborating with director Selvaraghavan. The ten-track experimental album, receiving exceptionally rave reviews, was considered Yuvan Shankar Raja's finest work till then and being hailed as a "musical masterpiece". The soundtrack and score of the film featured a traditional orchestral score played by the "Chapraya Symphony" of Bangkok, the first time in a Tamil film. Critics felt that this project, in particular, proved his abilities and talent to produce innovative and experimentative scores as well. Karthik Srinivasan from milliblog commented that "Yuvan’s imagination soars way beyond the confines of a Tamil movie OST", describing the album as "clearly one of the most innovative albums in recent times". The film itself, releasing only in May 2006, did average business, despite opening to outstanding reviews.

He next worked on the romantic comedies Happy and Azhagai Irukkirai Bayamai Irukkirathu and the gangster film Pattiyal, which all released in early 2006. His Happy songs and score received positive reviews, with critics labelling the "youthful music" as "excellent", and the film's "main strength", whilst his score for Pattiyal was highly praised by critics; a Sify reviewer wrote, "Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music and background score is the life of the film". Further more, both films went on to become very successful ventures, both commercially and critically. His subsequent releases that year include Silambarasan's debut directorial, Vallavan and the action entertainer Thimiru.

Yuvan Shankar Raja was hailed as the "real hero" of the former, which featured some of the year's most listened tracks like "Loosu Penne" and "Yammadi Aathadi", while the latter film ranked amongst the year's highest-grossing films. In November 2006, the Paruthiveeran soundtrack album got released, which saw the composer foraying into pure rural folk music, using traditional music instruments. Though initially releasing to mixed reviews, with critics doubting whether the songs could attract modern youth audience, his first attempt at rural music turned out to be a major success, following the film's outstanding run at the box office. The film, Ameer's third feature film as well as Karthi's debut venture, received universal critical acclaim after its release in February 2007 and became a blockbuster, whilst particularly the song "Oororam Puliyamaram" was a chartbuster number in Tamil Nadu.

In 2007, he had a record ten album releases in one year. The first was the soundtrack of the romantic drama film Deepavali, following which the audios of the sports comedy film Chennai 600028, the Telugu family entertainer Aadavari Matalaku Ardhalu Verule, Vasanth's thriller film Satham Podathey and the romantic films Thottal Poo Malarum and Kannamoochi Yenadareleased, with the former three being well-received besides garnering positive reviews. The films, Chennai 600028, Venkat Prabhu's directorial debut, and Aadavari Matalaku Ardhalu Verule, Selvaraghavan's Telugu debut, in particular, were great commercial successes and one of the year's most successful films in Tamil and Telugu, respectively.

In late 2007 then, the audio and the film Kattradhu Thamizh got released. The soundtrack album, which was released as Tamil M. A., as well as the film itself, had been met with exceptionally positive reviews and critical acclaim. The music was widely considered a "musical sensation" and noted to be a proof of Yuvan Shankar Raja's "composing skills". However, despite outstanding reviews by critics, the venture failed to evoke the interest of the audience and did not enjoy much popularity. His final release of 2007 was Billa, a remake of the 1980 Rajinikanth-starrer of the same title. This film, remade by Vishnuvardhan, starring Ajith Kumar in the title role, also featured two remixes from the original version. The film emerged one of the top-grossers of the year, whilst also fetching rave reviews for Yuvan Shankar's stylish musical score.

Thanks to this film's enormous success, Yuvan Shankar Raja eventually broke into the Tamil music scene as offers were pouring in subsequently. He was mainly approached by many young new directors. In 2001 he had three album releases, the first being Thulluvadho Ilamai, collaborating with Selvaraghavan for the first time. The soundtrack album of Thulluvadho Ilamaiparticularly appealed to the younger generation. The film itself, marking the debut of Selvaraghavan's brother Dhanush, released one year later and became a sleeper hit at the Chennai box office. This was followed by Bala's Nandha (2001), for which he received rave reviews.

He then gained notice by churning out "youthful music" in the college-life based April Maadhathil (2002), the romantic comedy films Kadhal Samrajyam (2002), and Mounam Pesiyadhe (2002), Ameer's directorial debut film, and the triangular love story Punnagai Poove(2002), in which he also made his on-screen debut, appearing in some scenes and one song sequence. At the same time he made his Telugu debut with Seshu and Malli Malli Chudali and also composed for the Tamil films Junior Senior and Pop Carn, starring Malayalam actors Mammootty and Mohan Lal, respectively, all of which performing poorly at the box offices, though.

In 2003 Selvaraghavan's first independent directorial, the drama-thriller film Kaadhal Kondein released, which is considered a milestone for Yuvan Shankar Raja. His work in the film, particularly his background score, was unanimously praised, leading to the release of a separate CD consisting of several film score pieces, a la "Hollywood-style", which was reportedly the first film score CD release in India. Furthermore, the film went on to become a blockbuster, cementing the film's lead artist Dhanush and Yuvan Shankar in the Tamil film and music industry.

The same year, he worked in Vishnuvardhan's debut film, Kurumbu, which featured the first remix song in a Tamil film. In 1996, following his mother's suggestion to take up music as a profession, Yuvan Shankar Raja started composing tunes for a private album. It was then that T. Siva, the producer of the Tamil language film Aravindhan, after hearing some of the tunes, asked to compose a trailer music. As the producer was so much impressed of which, he gave Yuvan Shankar the assignment to compose the entire film score including a soundtrack for that film. After consulting and getting consent from his parents, he accepted the offer; his music career started. His entry into the Tamil film and music industry had happened at age 16, thus becoming one of the most youngest composers ever in the industry, which, he says, was "purely accidental".

However, both the soundtrack album as well as the film itself failed to attract audiences and to do well and Yuvan Shankar Raja's following projects Velai (1998) and Kalyana Galatta(1998) were not successful either; his compositions for these films did not receive good reviews or responses, with one reviewer labelling the music and re-recording in the latter as "cacophony" and "poor". This eventually caused that he hardly got any film projects and assignments. During this time of struggling, he was approached and assigned by directorVasanth to compose the music for his film Poovellam Kettuppar (1999). The soundtrack received very positive response, bring described as "fresh" and "different", with a critic from The New Indian Express citing that his "absolutely enchanting musical score bears testimony to his ‘Raja’ surname." The album became very popular, particularly songs like "Irava Pagala" and "Chudithar Aninthu", gaining him first time notice, especially among young people and children. The album would make possible his first breakthrough in the industry and proved to be a major turning point in his career.

After working for two Sundar C. films, Unakkaga Ellam Unakkaga (1999) and Rishi (2000), which both fared averagely at the box office, he got to work for A. R. Murugadoss' directorial debut in 2000, the action flick Dheena starring Ajith Kumar, which went on to become a blockbuster and Yuvan Shankar Raja's first major successful film. Noted film director and film composer Gangai Amaran and late R. D. Bhaskar are his uncles and their sons Venkat Prabhu, Premji Amaran and Parthi Bhaskar, who are working in theTamil film industry as well, are his cousins. Moreover, Yuvan Shankar and both the sons of Gangai Amaran, do often associate with each other and have often worked together, the results of which have been very successful. The film score and the soundtrack were composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, who renewed his previous association with director Vishnuvardhan, who have earlier created very successful musical albums in Arinthum Ariyamalum, Pattiyal and Billa. The soundtrack was formally released on 14th February, 2009, coninciding with Valentine's Day at the Inox Complex in Chennai.

It comprises of 5 tracks, lyrics for which were written by Vishnuvardhan's "usual lyricist", Pa. Vijay. Out of the five tracks, two were sung by composer Yuvan Shankar Raja himself and one song by his father Ilaiyaraaja. According to the director, two of the songs ("Neethane" and "Sutta Suriyana") were composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja even before Vishnuvardhan's previous venture Billa had started, when Sarvam was first announced in October 2006, nearly 2 years earlier.

Aegan (Tamil: ஏகன், English: Protector) is a 2008 Tamil action and romantic film. Directed and co-written by Raju Sundaram and produced by Ayngaran International. It stars Ajith Kumar, Nayantara, Suman, Jayaram, Navdeep and Piaa Bajpai.

The film revolves around a dare devil cop who, on behalf of his ailing father and the ambition of a lieutanent general returns to college in Ooty. Whilst protecting the general's daughter, he attempts to reconcile with his stepbrother from his father's marriage.

Furthermore, he has to ward off the international criminal John Chinnappa, who is trying to kill the genral, an ex-aide of his who has turned police approver. How the cop manages to solve all three problems forms the crux of the story.

The film opened to Indian audiences, on 25 October 2008, coinciding with the Diwali season. The film, upon release fetched average reviews on the actors' performances, the film went on to win the box office battle which occurred during Diwali 2008 and became an average hit at the South Indian box office.

The film, which featured music from Yuvan Shankar Raja, is remade drawing inspirations from the 1986 Hollywood venture, Back to School as well as the 2004 Bollywood film, Main Hoon Na.
